PECK Tenant
Tenant Peck, father of Mrs Jerimiah Turk of
Joplin, died at his home in Reading Centre,
Schuyler county, NY, June 12 1889, aged
88 years. A local report of the funeral says:
The burial of the late tenant Peck took place
June 14 1889, when a very large number
attended the service in the Baptist church,
conducted by Rev. Napoleon Smith assisted
by Rev. P.J. Bell. Mr Smith prefaced his
discourse with the following:
"Great & many have been the changes since
loving parents first gazed on him around
whose mortal remains we gather today. Tenant
Peck, so widely known as Uncle Tenant, was
born in the infancy on the 19th century, on the
19th of December 1801, in the town of
Lexington, Green county, NY. On the 9th of
May 1824 he was married to Derenda Sutton
of Reading. The fruits of the union were Mrs
Maranda Davidson of Corydon, Pa., Mrs Eliza
J Turk of Joplin Mo, John S Peck and Fernando
Peck of Thurston, NY, Simon S Peck of Reading,
Mrs Lydia Holly of Reading, Miss Sophrona,
Erasmus & Miss Candace Peck, deceased.
The departed joined our church shortly after it
was opened in 1837, and has led a devoted
christian life ever since. His interest in the
affairs of the church was such that he never,
even in his extreme age, forgot the covenant meeting.
He has been called to that bright home for the
children of God. Our old friend was not afraid
to die for he knew God had pardoned him and
justified him through Jesus Christ, in whom he
trusted for eternal life."
